PILATES
Tawny Gentry, Certified Pilates Trainer

Thousands of people are benefiting from Pilates training and now you have the opportunity to receive this training at The Culture House!

Pilates was originally developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s as a form of rehabilitation and physical therapy.  He worked extensively with dancers and athletes, helping them further develop their musculature to be strong, long, and lean, and train their muscles to move with maximum efficiency.

Basically, Pilates is a combination of strength training, flexibility, and conditioning.  It is an excellent toning program, which, in addition to cardio workout, assists in increasing metabolism and reshaping the body for any weight loss program.  It focuses on core strength and the "powerhouse" (abdominals, back, butt, and inner thighs) although arm and leg strength are also incorporated into each class.  It also focuses on proper alignment and improves strength, balance, and coordination, therefore, preventing injury.

Dancers particularly like Pilates because it develops strong muscle tone needed to excel in performance and execution of dance technique without causing muscles to look bulky.  Many women struggle with knowing how to go about strength training properly and Pilates training is an excellent solution!  Because there are many variations to each exercise, classes can accommodate all ages and levels of fitness with each feeling properly challenged.

I began training in Pilates in Los Angeles in 1998 and was certified by Pilates Lifestyles Houston in 2005.  I have personally experienced the benefits of Pilates training and this is what urged me to pursue certification and pass this training on to others.  I am continually amazed at how I always finish a Pilates class knowing my muscles have been thoroughly worked but with my body (particularly my back) feeling better than it did when I entered! And that is certainly something not all exercise programs can boast of!

Here are the times we are offering:

Yes, those Tues./Thurs. are early, but we are hoping to accommodate collegiate or working women as well as the busy mothers before taking their children to school.  Plus, why not start the day off with an endorphin booster, since exercise has been proven to enhance mood!
